Haiti Trip 2/2010
I would like to say that my mission trip to Haiti has changed my life dramatically. But it has not. My everyday life is the same, my stresses, problems and challenges are the same. Somewhere inside, I keep waiting for this BIG change to happen. I am now, after 7 weeks, pretty sure that the big change is not going to happen. At least not quickly, and not on the time table I expected.
I know we helped a lot of people when we were there. The needs are many!! The children were awesome! They deeply longed just to hold your hand or touch your arm. They loved having their picture taken and then pulling the camera to their faces, so they could see themselves.
I can’t imagine what it must be like to live their lives. Most of the children seemed very happy and you could see the beauty of Haiti shining in their eyes. But some of their eyes seemed to show despair, with the question of how long will the sufferings of Haiti last?

But I think that an event in our life, like a mission trip, will continue to bear fruit, long after we even realize it. We never know when or how God may use that event to open our hearts. Maybe so we can help someone or strengthen a relationship, and certainly to help us blossom more fully in our walk with Christ.
For now, I am very grateful for the small changes I have seen in my life. I am spending more time with God, in prayer. I am reading a daily devotional and looking up the scriptures referenced. (This wonderful little book was in my night stand for a year) I am biting my tongue a little more and opening my mouth a little less. I think God is pleased with these baby steps I am making.
As for Haiti, I am hooked. After reading about its tragic history, knowing the awful toll past hurricanes have taken on this beautiful island and now seeing the devastating effects of the earthquake with my own eyes, I have a very soft spot in my heart for the Haitian people. They are a wonderful people. And I see how much God is working there and I intend to continue to be involved. Whether I go back again on a mission trip or help out at church with events pertaining to Haiti, my love and support will be there.
