Haiti - June 2011
By Jennifer Fairlamb
My time in Haiti was truly a life-changing experience. I have a much greater understanding and appreciation for the people of Haiti. Their spirit was inspiring and the love they showed us was amazing. I arrived there thinking about what I could do to help the people I met and returned home realizing that they gave me so much more! They live in conditions that are very challenging yet they don’t complain or act out with bitterness. Instead they smile, hug and sing. In the eyes of so many of the children I saw the light of hope and the love of Christ. This was truly a gift.
I had the privilege of serving with an incredible team assembled from three states and I saw God moving in each of their lives during the trip. The best part was serving along side my teenage daughter. She is the one who initiated the idea of us going to Haiti. Seeing Christ’s strength and love flow through her is something that I will treasure forever!
This experience has caused me reevaluate how I think about spending my time and resources. It has helped me to see the excesses of this country but also appreciate the structure and services that our country provides. I hope to never take this for granted. I learned so much about what is really important and experienced the pure joy that comes from depending completely on Christ.
I would encourage you to lift up the people of Haiti in prayer, share your treasures with them and volunteer your time and talent to serve and be Christ to them in their country.

Words can’t even begin to fully describe my experience in Haiti. But, if I had to describe my experience in a sentence I would say that while it was one of the most challenging experiences of my life, it was also one of the most rewarding. The magnitude of poverty is overwhelming and the fact that it was so widespread was difficult to see, but seeing the presence of God and Jesus alive in the Haitian people we met was indeed a blessing. The Haitian people are rich in spirit and some of the nicest people I have ever encountered. Even though they have very little, they still desire to show you and give you their best. The kids we met in the orphanages amazed and touched me the most because of their passion for Jesus and for their loving, welcoming hearts and spirits. They quickly became an inspiration to me and I believe they should be for everyone because they find joy in the simplest things as well as the most important: their faith.
I feel incredibly blessed to have served in Haiti and for the amazing people God called to be a part of our team. I believe we touched a lot of kids and made a difference in their lives by showing them that we care and that Jesus loves them and has the desire to be a part of their lives. I would definitely love to go back again sometime and I would encourage anyone to go at least once in a lifetime. It has changed my heart and created a new perspective for me on how I should live my life: centered in Christ.
