Cherette Gabion construction
At our site in Cherette, ESMI has a church, school, medical clinic
and orphanage. The site is located next to a river. This past year the
rains have begun washing out the bank and the river is encroaching upon
our facility. Last month one of our visiting short-term teams was in the
area and was so moved by the situation that they decided to do something
about it.
In God’s good providence, the team had an engineer with them. He put
together a design to place gabions (wire baskets filled with rock) along
the riverbank to stop the erosion. ESMI's Haiti staff was able to secure
an estimate to have the work completed and the team then returned home
and immediately went to work to raise the funds to do this project.
The project is well underway with hopes to have it completed before the
end of this month .We are estimating that by the time we finish the
project we will have employed many people at one point in time or
another. We even have a cook in place to feed the workers lunch.
Thanks to the support from our friends in the Chicago area, we have been
able to keep our children and our facility safer from any future erosion
or potential flooding.

Vanuatu--10,000 members of a “cargo cult” are part of a
wonderful people movement to Christ in Vanuatu. The John Frum
cargo cult has held captive the hearts of its members for the last 70
years. As Vanuatu was turning increasingly to Christ in the 1930s,
a village chief told the people, “Don’t become Christians. Avoid
education. Return to your voodoo and pagan ways and much ‘cargo’
will be given to you.” It was something of the wealth and
prosperity message except in reverse. “Stay pagan, and you’ll
prosper.” But the folks have seen that they have not prospered,
and those that became Christians are indeed blessed, so there are
turning from their pagan ways and asking the Presbyterian Church of
Vanuatu to help them understand and become Christians.

Mission to North America and El Shaddai Ministries Honored by Haitian Senate
Tuesday, 06 April 2010 00:49
On Tuesday March 29, Mission to North America (MNA) and El Shaddai
Ministries International (ESMI), both ministries of the Presbyterian
Church in America (PCA), were honored by the Haitian Senate for their
relief efforts following the devastation from the earthquake in January.
Dony St. Germain, pastor of El Shaddai PCA in Miami, provided much of
the oversight for the relief efforts in Haiti. The President and
Secretary of the Haitian Senate person
ally
handed the recognition award to St. Germain and Arklie Hooten, Short
Term Missions & Disaster Response Director for MNA. Both Dony and Arklie
were surprised by the award and the ceremony. In his remarks, Hooten
stated that he accepted the award on behalf of MNA’s Coordinator, Jim
Bland, the many MNA/PCA volunteers who have served, and the financial
supporters and prayer partners. The award stated, “The Senate of the
Republic of Haiti would like to recognise El Shaddai Ministries
International Inc. (ESMI) and Mission to North America (MNA) for their
relief efforts in the days and weeks immediately following the tragic
earthquake on Tuesday, January 12, 2010. Haiti was at her greatest need
ever.
Thank you for your intervention medically, socially, and
economically. Presented in Port-au-Prince March 29, 2010” The
certificate was signed by Dr. Kelley Bastien, President of the Senate,
and Pierre Franky Exius, Secretary of the Senate. Also on hand were
around 50 key Haitian pastors from across the country, some from
churches with up to 5,000 members. Others present were Bresile St.
Germain, Dr. Jay Sklar from Covenant Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri,
and Dr. Steve McGee-Director of Ministries in Action in Miami, Florida.
