Missions Trip to Zambia, Africa –June 2010
What: To help build a library for a village, while sharing the gospel of Jesus.
Where: Mukumbi, 3 hrs drive from Solwezi in the NW province, 8 hrs from Lusaka
With Whom:
- Theresa Thaete, women’s ministry leader Lakeview Presbyterian
Church, Vernon Hills, IL 1993-present; Navigator staff 1974-1992,
serving in Zambia 1986-1991; wife and mother of two teenage boys, age 16
& 17. Mrs. Thaete’s sons and other adult church members and friends will
compose the team.
- Marie Burger, Willowcreek Church, retired schoolteacher,
missionary to Russia
Background: Theresa has been partnering with a young Zambian woman, Belita, former indigenous Navigator staff who is now working on her 2nd Masters at the Univ. of NE. Belita’s grandfather is the chief of the province of the targeted remote village. She knows how education opened doors for her. Theresa and Belita have collected and shipped over 100 boxes of textbooks and school supplies. The plan is to work with the headmaster and teachers of this elementary school to help the students develop a love of books and reading, to expand their worlds, their imaginations and creativity! We hope to challenge them to dream a bigger dream for their lives! A library is needed to keep the books secure and safe from thieves and from the elements. It will also be a resource to kids and families from surrounding villages.
When: 2-3 weeks, somewhere between June 5-28; (*the World Cup is being held in South Africa in mid-June; flexibility is important at present for obtaining the best air fare) 3 weeks is ideal considering the travel times, as well as the one days’ travel from the capital city to the village.) Adults may commit to 2 weeks if their schedule does not permit longer. We hope to visit Victoria Falls and a game park at the end of our work time.
Cost: * Approx. $3-4000/person
- Airfare: around $2-3000*
- Travel while there and food: $2-400??
- Building supplies: $500 (Theresa is attempting to raise
$20,000 from other sources)
